The new chief executive of the Falkland Islands Government, Tim Thorogood, is combing the UK for top managers to work on the islands' ambitious regeneration programme. A former chief of Swansea CC and the Local Government Information Unit, until his move to the Falklands last December, Mr Thorogood is seeking two top managers on £100,000. One is to head up the development corporation and the other to project-manage a major new port scheme. He said: ‘Most senior posts tend to be filled from the UK, although a lot come from New Zealand and Australia, because of farming similarities, while the fishing department is full of East Europeans.' Salaries are tax-free up to £13,000, then taxed at 21% up to £26,000, and 26% from then on, while there is no VAT and no council tax. Some 600 staff work for the Falkland Islands Government, which runs all the public sector. Dr Thorogood added: ‘The scale is small but the scope is huge. It's so different from working for a UK council.'
