Calls from health secretary, Alan Johnson, and communities secretary, Hazel Blears, to encourage councils to keep burger vans and chip shops away from schools have been welcomed by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE). ‘We cannot continue to provide school children with healthy eating messages and, at the same time, allow the unfettered growth of junk food merchants outside the school gates,' said APSE chief executive, Paul O'Brien.
