Engineering firm Costain has claimed it is still in the running to buy Mouchel, despite the support services group announcing it was in advance talks with rivals Interserve.

The two potential suitors for the local government contractor published their annual results last week, with Costain reporting a rise in pre-tax profits from £18.1m in 2009 to £27.9m in 2010.
