The Government's narrow focus on cuts and public outsourcing during the spending squeeze has put much-needed public service innovation and productivity at risk, the Work Foundation warned this week.

A report by the think-tank, published on 17 May, urges all public bodies to reconsider their spending cuts with a view to improving the way they spend an estimated £50bn annually on ‘intangible' – or knowledge-based – services, such as policy advice.
