The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned new laws going through Parliament could mean the end of on-the-spot hygiene checks for restaurants and takeaways.

Eland House fears the Protection of Freedoms Bill could mean environmental health officers would only be able to inspect restaurants if they have a court warrant or permission to enter properties from business owners. The proposed rules could also impact on trading standards officers and pollution control inspectors.
