Relations between councils and the Home Office soured further this week after the department was accused of failing to communicate properly over housing asylum seekers.

In Hampshire, the leader of Labour-controlled Havant BC said the Home Office and private contractor Clearsprings had failed to consult the council properly over the planned use of flats in a shopping precinct as a dispersal centre for asylum seekers waiting for their applications to be determined.
