Doncaster's mayor, Martin Winter, faces being ousted after councillors voted in support of a referendum to remove the elected mayoral system. The mayor has faced a number of allegations about his conduct, and former managing director, Susan Law, called in the fraud squad to investigate a community project formerly run by the mayor (The MJ, 12 October 2006). The criminal investigation was thrown out, but the relationship between Ms Law and Mr Winter broke down irrevocably. Interim managing director Paul Hart said: ‘Members of the elections corporate and finance committee agreed to work together to organise a referendum as soon as it can be held.'
