The public sector workplace has moved into the 21st century with a deal to boost mobile voice and data services. A best-value arrangement, worth an estimated £170m a year, was announced by OGCbuying.solutions to cover a range of devices, including e-mail and pager handsets. From January, buyers will be able to order a catalogue of services which will improve competition among suppliers which include BT, O2 UK, T-Mobile (UK) and Vodafone UK. The framework agreements cover mobile voice and data, and wide-area paging and messaging, as well as bespoke mobile solutions. As the public sector embraces innovations such as hot-desking and mobile working, the need for the latest technology will rapidly increase. Nigel George, OGC project manager, predicted the deal would bring significant benefits. He said: ‘It secures existing benefits enjoyed by customers, provides new savings opportunities, and satisfies the growing demand for more flexible mobile voice and data services designed to meet the demands of the transformational government agenda.' Peter Kelly, enterprise director at Vodafone UK, welcomed the announcement. ‘Our public sector customers are extremely important and fully supported at every level of the Vodafone organisation. We have developed a range of exciting new services to deliver clear benefits in productivity and the adoption of increasingly flexible working styles,' he said.
