Ministers have announced a £2.6m package designed to provide disabled candidates with a level playing field in future local elections.

Under the 'Access to elected office' strategy launched on 9 July – an initiative supported by the Home Office, the Department for Work and Pensions and Cabinet Office – disabled people will be allowed to apply for additional expenses such as transport costs or sign language interpreters.
