Hackney LBC and Hackney Homes have selected Genesis Housing Group as the preferred bidder for a £750m contract. The group will be the registered social landlord for the latest phase of the Woodberry Down regeneration scheme. Subject to a successful stock transfer ballot, possibly in November, Genesis will work within a consortium with a developer that is expected to be appointed in the summer. They will manage 1,100 existing homes on the estate and replace the existing homes with new social rented homes, as well as add around 550 intermediate homes. Chief executive of Genesis Housing Group, Anu Vedi, said: ‘It is especially important to us that we have been chosen by both the local people and the council.' Woodberry Down is set to provide more than 4,500 new homes of all tenures on a site off Woodberry Down, Hackney. The scheme has been recognised by the Government as a ‘national demonstration project' for the mixed communities initiative. Work began on the Woodberry Down regeneration scheme last week, kick-started by a grant of £16m from the Homes and Communities Agency. The first site will be built by Berkeley Homes Plc. Cllr Karen Alcock, deputy mayor of Hackney, said: ‘The process of choosing Genesis has involved residents throughout, and stiff competition has meant we have secured the best possible bid to take the scheme forward.' Genesis will also invest around £3M into the local community. The idea for a new housing project in the area was first raised in the 1990s.
