The leader of Scotland's largest local authority has called for cities to be given the lion's share of government funding. Speaking at the annual conference of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry, Glasgow City Council leader, Steven Purcell, said there should be a more ‘considered distribution of public funds'. ‘Of course, funding must still be allocated across the country to ensure the viability of all local communities,' said Cllr Purcell. ‘But, if we are serious about succeeding, then cities must receive a greater share of funding to create the conditions and services to grow our economy. This will not be a simple process. Every area of Scotland will will, understandably, continue to fight for their share of central government funding. ‘However, we owe it to ourselves to spend this money in the way that will offer us the greatest returns and success.' Cllr Purcell said 20,000 new jobs were created in Glasgow last year, and the council recently launched a £1bn reform of public services, which would bring together around 6,000 staff.
