One of local government's biggest trade unions has called for councils to be handed radical powers to compulsory purchase under-used local holiday homes in areas of acute housing need.

The GMB union also wants councils to receive powers to levy taxes on holiday homes which are only used for a few weeks each year, to create more cash for local house-building.
