Senior council managers should pay a new employee rate of 10% into their pension funds, the GMB union has urged. The union has written to local government minister, John Healey, asking for the new band, 2.5% more than the current ceiling, to be imposed on staff earning more than £100,000 a year. It has also requested that the rate for lower paid staff should be reduced. The new pension system, introduced last spring, introduced bands from 5.5% to 7.%% to reflect pay levels, but the union argues that ‘accelerating salary increases for the highest paid' has distorted the figures.
