Coalition ministers have come under attack for scrapping measures forcing Whitehall departments and councils to help cut inequality caused by socio-economic background.
Home secretary Theresa May announced on 17 November that the ‘socio-economic duty' would be ditched from the existing Equality Act because it ‘would have been just another bureaucratic box to be ticked' and ‘would have meant more time filling in forms and less time focusing on policies that will make a real difference to people's life chances'.
