Middlesbrough’s directly-elected mayor, Ray Mallon, has urged ministers – not town halls – to take a firm grip on senior officials’ pay.

Middlesbrough's directly-elected mayor, Ray Mallon, has urged ministers – not town halls – to take a firm grip on senior officials' pay.

Mr Mallon, an independent mayor, said it was the Government's failure to stop senior salaries from spiralling upwards which was behind communities secretary Eric Pickles' current drive to restrain wage deals.
