The Government does not underestimate the financial challenges facing local government, minister Paul Scully told south east councils this week.

The Government does not underestimate the financial challenges facing local government, minister Paul Scully told south east councils this week.

Speaking at the South East England Councils (SEEC) Summit in Westminster, Mr Scully – a former Sutton councillor- said the Government was ‘standing ready to support you through these challenging times'.

He added: ‘I also understand the importance of giving you financial certainty.'

Speaking at the same event, the leader of Sevenoaks DC called for a debate on what local government was for and proper funding to deliver.

Writing in The MJ this week, SEEC chief executive Sean McKee called for a two-year pilot of devolved tax raising powers. He said: ‘Local authorities which are in areas making a net contribution to the Exchequer should be able to raise additional levies to fund investment'.
