Government wins legal battle over prices index

Judges have ruled the Government was lawful in switching the measure of inflation used to increase public sector pensions.

Judges have ruled the Government was lawful in switching the measure of inflation used to increase public sector pensions from the Retail Prices Index (RPI) to the lower Consumer Prices Index (CPI).

The High Court rejected a legal challenge brought by six public sector unions arguing the measure – introduced in April – breached social security laws preventing national economic considerations from determining inflation rates.
