Education secretary Michael Gove plans to ‘bring history alive' for schoolchildren – by encouraging schools to take them to local historical sights.
Mr Gove has announced that around £3m will be invested by the Department for Education in a ‘Rich island story' programme, designed to stir interest in local histories. The department will channel the cash through English Heritage and local partners. Sites already visited through a scheme in Norfolk include the great Tudor pilgrimage chapel used as a gunpowder store during the English Civil War – recreated faithfully by the Sealed Knot group – thereby proving to all youngsters that history allows you to never grow up!
