A London borough is using high street retail giants in a bid to reach the ‘grey pound'. Harrow LBC has joined forces with stores including pharmacist giant, Boots, to enable older people to buy vital equipment, such as grab rails and other small aids, directly from their high street. Not only will the scheme save around £300,000 a year, but, equally importantly, it will give vulnerable people more control. Cllr Barry Macleod-Cullinane, portfolio-holder for adults and housing, said: ‘The changes will put users at the heart of the service and help stimulate the local economy during the downturn.'
