The number of councils in Wales could be halved, according to online reports. The Williams Commission is expected to publish its recommendations for the number of local authorities in Wales later this month, but according to a report on the Wales Eye website, it will call for the current 22 councils to be cut down to 11. According to the website, the commission is likely to suggest that more services are merged as well. In October 2013, the Welsh fire minister, Carwyn Jones, said: ‘There is almost no one now who says that the current structure of 22 local authorities is the right one for Wales.' A spokesman for the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) said: ‘We have submitted detailed evidence and now await the publication of a full report on the findings of the Commission on Public Service Governance and Delivery. ‘How the recommendations made within the report are taken forward will depend on the views of the Welsh Government as the commissioners of this report and once it is made available the WLGA will study the findings closely with the leaders of Wales' 22 local councils.'
