Happiness from afar Happy New Year, Diary stalwarts! One hopes everybody had a restful festive break and stayed off the mince pies, brandy butter and mulled wine long enough to watch the repeat of the TV repeat of the Two Ronnies repeat. Oh for some money to spend on Christmas television, eh? Or on council services, for that matter. Snow unfair: Northumberland's Janice Barclay's far-flung fun. Such was the dreary nature of the festive telly that some of you didn't even hang around the UK when the winter holiday period loomed large. Take Janice Barclay, lead HR business partner at Northumberland CC, for example. Sitting around on the sofa, scoffing chocolates and keeping warm in that awful Christmas jumper clearly did not appeal. So Janice set off for Dubai and Thailand in pursuit of fun and sun – upholding, in the process, The MJ tradition of posing with copies of the mag in far-flung places. We're all insanely jealous, of course. But here's a question for you, Janice. Why did you go all the way to the Middle East and end up on a ski-ing slope? Still, at least Janice whizzed downhill – too many in local government spent 2011 with the un-nerving feeling that they were moving sluggishly uphill. With a weight on their back.
