Poverty and care in old age are becoming significant fears for people in Britain, according to the Department of Health. Living alone, poor and in poor health has become a key concern for 86% of people who admitted they feared getting older. Health secretary, Andy Burnham, used the publication of results to urge people to respond to his consultation on the future of care services which closes in one month's time. The survey found 38% now worried about living in poverty, and 54% feared dementia. Mr Burnham said: ‘We're currently having a big care debate with the public about how to make this National Care Service simple, fair and affordable for all. The debate ends in a month and it's essential people have their say.'
