The Government has pledged extra help for flood victims this Christmas, after it emerged almost 1,000 families were still either living in temporary accommodation or the upstairs in their homes. Floods recovery minister, John Healey, said he would be linking up with council leaders in Hull, East Riding and Tewkesbury – the worst affected areas from the 2007 summer floods – to offer fresh support to families. He said: ‘While more than 16,000 families are now back home, and 100 are returning each week, I want those who are not to know they are not forgotten and not on their own. I am especially concerned about families facing a second Christmas in caravans. ‘That's why I am linking up with council leaders in the worst-affected areas to offer fresh help.' Councils officials will visit more than 100 families to identify what help they need.
