Health minister, Ben Bradshaw, has waded into the snowballing row over local government reorganisation in Devon. Mr Bradshaw, MP for Exeter, has excoriated a county councillor, Liberal Democrat David Cox, for suggesting the city should be represented by a parish council, under proposals to introduce a single-tier authority across Devon. Mr Bradshaw said Mr Cox's suggestion was ‘outrageous'. ‘It reveals what county Lib Dems and Conservatives would really do if they get their supersized Devon council. Exeter is a proud historic city. To suggest we should be reduced to a parish is a gross insult to Exeter,' he said. The Boundary Committee is currently reviewing plans to reorganise Devon's local government system, with two potential systems emerging – a single county unitary and a two-unitary option, which would offer Exeter and Exmouth, as well as the rural county, the opportunity of single-tier governance. Proponents of both options have accused the other side of misinformation about the impact on local taxes and services.
