Health powers transfer backed by council chiefs

Transfer of responsibilities for public health to local government will be healthier for communities, an MJ and Ipsos Mori survey reveals.

Almost two-thirds of council leaders and chief executives think communities will be healthier following the transfer of responsibilities for public health to local government, an exclusive survey by Ipsos MORI and The MJ has revealed.

Senior figures are also optimistic about the economy, with 36% believing their local economy will improve in the next 12 months, 25% think it will get worse. Overall, 96% of council leaders and chief executives believe their council does the best job it can – given the money available. However, finances and budgets remain the main challenges ahead, the poll indicates.
