Not so long ago, August used to be the silly season for news, as outlets scratched round while Parliament – and the rest of the world – took a summer break.

Now, August marks the peak of small boat crossings, with rising temperatures matched by rising political tensions. Asylum has become the story of the summer.

Recent elections have shifted the dial. Reform UK has won a place in the national – and local – political narrative while asylum and immigration are no longer solely the concern of the Right. They matter to the electorate – and therefore matter across the political spectrum.
