Gordon Brown is facing angry opposition from local government leaders after unveiling plans to speed up expansion at London's Heathrow Airport. Speaking at the CBI annual conference, the prime minister vowed to speed-up delivery of big infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Heathrow's capacity. He told delegates: ‘We have to increase capacity at our airports, particularly Heathrow. Our prosperity depends on it.' The ‘2M' alliance of councils under its flightpath, vowed to fight any government plans to push ahead with expansion. Hounslow councillor Barbara Reid, speaking on behalf of 2M, said: ‘Mr Brown may be determined to turn a deaf ear on the concerns of our residents, but he is about to find out that opposition to expansion is just like Heathrow – very big and very noisy.'
