Highland Council is to shed more than 500 jobs in a radical package of reforms. Under plans entitled The Highland Council post-2007, chief executive, Arthur McCourt, hopes to restructure the council, slashing the number of departments from nine to six, with services delivered at ward level in future. The proposed changes would see 40 jobs lost at management level and 500 across the rest of the staff by March 2009. Councillors have given Mr McCourt the go-ahead, and more detailed plans will be unveiled at the end of August.
