It's the Walk of Wigan.. Home-grown local talent. You just can't beat it. Or easily find it. Following Bristol's recent search for city celebrities fit to adorn it's local currency, Diary hears that Wigan is keen to replicate Hollywood's famous ‘walk of fame' to add glamour to the new Wigan Life Centre. Of course, Hollywood has the unfair advantage of a century's head-start in serving as a global dream factory, continually attracting the finest creative talent the world can muster into its movie studios and creative industries. Last week, Matt Groening, creator of TV's The Simpsons became only the 2,461st star to push hands and feet into fast-setting concrete to mark the 500th episode of the show. Although facing a daunting deficit of 2,458 stars, Wiganers have made a promising start and chosen the first three local celebs in the most audacious catch-up in recorded history. First up, Stuart Maconie – broadcaster and author. He's the guy usually gabbling away on Channel Five shows, reviewing, with sickening misty-eyed saccharine sentimentality, the 1980s, 1990s or 100 best musicals featuring cheese. Proving they have the flexibility to look beyond their parish, Cardiff-born rugby league legend, Billy Boston, has mysteriously been co-opted to rival Hollywood's finest. So, too, has local entrepreneur John Winnard – one half of the team behind the borough's best-known global brand, Uncle Joe's Mintballs. Chomping furiously on a cigar, Diary endorses this initiative in the spirit of legendary movie-mogul, Samuel Goldwyn: ‘Spare no expense to save money on this one!'
