Reform of the council tax benefit system could cut bills for up to one in three households, according to new research. A study, commissioned by the LGA, is calling for changes to allow more people to claim reductions in council tax and to encourage people to apply for the £1.8bn that goes unclaimed every year. Six million people in poverty live in homes paying full council tax. LGA vice-chairman, Sir Jeremy Beecham,, said: ‘The system has been failing society's most vulnerable for too long. ‘Root and branch reform is sorely needed.'
