The Government's housing strategy risks clashing with major welfare reform plans, resulting in the effective ‘ghetto-isation' of certain areas, the chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has warned.

In a briefing given ahead of publication of the coalition's long-awaited housing strategy, Grainia Long warned the Government's desire to drive fundamental changes to both housing and welfare programmes simultaneously could force vulnerable people deemed to be living in under-occupied social housing to relocate – creating new pockets of deprivation.
