A senior Ofsted official warns wide regional variations in the quality of early years provision shows a failure to allocate resources.

Wide regional variations in the quality of early years provision indicate a failure to allocate resources properly, a senior Ofsted official warned this week.

Sue Gregory, the watchdog's national director for education, said there was too much variation in early years provision across the country, with too many children unprepared for school by the time they reached the age of five.
