Liberal Democrat leadership contender Chris Huhne has backed the LGA's call to increase recycling. Responding to the report on landfill, Mr Huhne said: ‘Ministers must give power to councils to innovate locally, to increase recycling rates through "rebate as you recycle" and other schemes. The amount going to landfill is a scandal and directly contributes to methane emissions, one of the worst greenhouse gases.'
