It was with some amusement that I read some pearls of wisdom delivered by a new Independent Councillor that we have in Central Beds, who shock horror was deeply concerned about the inability of Councillors of all flavours to sit on the Executive. Which got me thinking - what are Independent Councillors for?Generally elected either on a strong personal vote or as a result of some major local issue, Independents are generally useless when it comes to exerting much influence on matters affecting their electorate. Politics is a numbers game - you need not only to get a large number of votes to get elected, but once elected you need a majority of colleagues to vote with you if you are to achieve very much.So the 1 Labour, 4 Independent & 5 Liberal Councillors in Central Beds have, even collectively, little chance of achieving very much.
