One of the key, but sadly underreported recommendations included in Will Hutton's final report on his independent review into fair pay, was the need for greater transparency around the remuneration packages of senior managers in the public sector.
This has been a position that ACEVO has been championing for some time across the voluntary and community sectors. The last few years have seen a growing number of vicious attacks from the media, some elected representatives and trade unions on the salaries received by leaders working across the public and voluntary sectors. Their argument being that the budget deficit will somehow be solved by forcing drastic pay cuts on to public sector leaders or those running organisations reliant on public funding). This is not only fallacious, but it totally misses the point. Individuals taking on complex and highly-significant roles should be on salaries appropriate to the responsibility attached to them.
