Volunteers are a hugely-important resource but they don’t come for free, says Sir Stephen Bubb.

Recent news has been dominated by [executive director of the Community Service Volunteers] Dame Elisabeth Hoodless's warning that deep cuts in public spending were decimating the country's ‘volunteer army'.

This followed an admission by the Big Society ‘tsar', Lord Wei, that he had been forced to reduce the number of volunteer hours he was putting in to various government projects to take on paid roles, and spend more time with his young family.
