Investing in potential

Julie Young looks at the impact and value of Somerset’s supported internships.

Investing in potential

Since becoming involved in Somerset's Supported Internships programme, our aim has been to offer young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) the same opportunity as their peers to build meaningful careers and live independently.  Years on, I'm proud to say that what began as a pilot on a single hospital site has grown into a county-wide model delivering not only social transformation — but serious economic value too.

In Somerset, we've now supported more than 180 young people into Supported Internships. These are real jobs, with real employers, in sectors ranging from health to tech and engineering. They are structured pathways that offer tailored support and coaching. It has been a pleasure and a joy to watch these interns grow in confidence, skills and experience and see many of them securing paid employment.
