~Dumfries and Galloway Council~ had the difficult task of disposing of a 60-tonne, 62ft fin whale which beached on Barlocco Island in the Solway Firth. Options for its removal included cutting up the carcass and removing it by helicopter, but the cost was too high. The mammal was eventually cut up and buried on the island, which took a team of five men and one digger operator two days to carry out. The operation was funded with £10,000 from the Scottish Executive. Michael and Jo Forrester and niece Julia Donnelly visited the island before the burial.
