The imminent closure of a steel plant in Wales has triggered an emergency summit of local leaders. The Isle of Anglesey CC has staged its own economic forum to help find local problems brought about by the global economic downturn. Senior staff and councillors were joined by representatives from the Welsh National Assembly, Confederation of British Industry, Federation of Small Businesses and Citizens' Advice Bureau, together with representatives from the financial sector and local employers. Council leader, Phil Fowlie, has already warned that the possible imminent closure of Anglesey Aluminium would be ‘catastrophic' for the Island's economy. The critical issue is a new power deal with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority over Wylfa power station, which supplies the plant. Without a deal production is expected to end in September. Cllr Fowlie said: ‘We must continue to work to secure the future of Wylfa, as well as ensuring that Ynys Môn remains an important centre for energy generation. ‘With 35% of the population of north Anglesey employed at Wylfa, we can not underestimate its contribution to the island's economy. It remains one of Ynys Môn's largest employers.'
