Mendip DC has pledged to help staff at Britain's oldest jail find new employment, after the Government announced the site would close as part of controversial plans for a ‘super-prison'.
Shepton Mallet prison was one of six sites earmarked for closure by the Ministry of Justice, officials announced on 10 January. Ministers intend to replace these older structures with Britain's largest correctional facility, capable of holding more than 2,000 inmates.
