Melton BC's plans to restructure have angered union officials who claim they threaten both jobs and efficiency. The council is consulting on proposals to restructure customer services, revenues and benefits, and social and economic development departments, with retraining for up to 70 people. The plans could also see the loss of up to eight jobs. Unison officials at the council warn they could lead to a drop rather than improvement in performance. But a council spokeswoman said: ‘All local authorities are under increasing pressures to modernise, provide better services and to operate more efficiently. Melton BC needs to respond to these challenges in order to protect local service delivery in the future. We do not envisage a large number of redundancies.'
