Leading local government liberal democrat Richard Kemp has denied reports that a fall in candidates contesting seats in next month's elections is a defensive move by the party.

The full detail of the number of seats being contested will emerge later today, but it is expected that the Conservatives will stand in around 90% of wards, Labour in 70%, while the Liberal Democrats are unlikely to field candidates for more than 60% of seats.
