Labour's London mayoral candidate, Ken Livingstone, has vowed to set up an Equal Pay Commissioner to close the gender gap in the capital, if elected next May.

Under Mr Livingstone's plans any firm winning a contract from the GLA group, which includes Transport for London and the Metropolitan Police Authority, would have to meet obligations under the Equal Pay Act and demonstrate policies for narrowing pay differentials.
