One of the biggest contracts to renew infrastructure has been signed by a London borough and a construction giant. Harrow LBC confirmed it had negotiated a five-year deal worth £125m with Kier to repair, maintain and improve most of its key buildings. The deal will cover homes, municipal offices, schools and leisure centres across the borough. A central part of funding for the contract will come through the Building Schools for the Future scheme and the Decent Homes initiative. Kier was selected because of its ability to deliver across a range of services, and the deal will enable the council to make substantial savings of up to £1.5m a year. The council is confident that bringing in a large-scale contractor will also make its housing service more responsive to tenants. Harrow is facing particular pressure on housing stock and has been battling the Government to get extra cash because it has a fast-rising population. Council leader, Chris Mote, said: ‘This is an exciting opportunity for both Harrow and Kier to develop the additional capacity needed to deliver our ambitious programme of major works.'
