Knowsley MBC's director of environmental services and sustainability, John Flaherty, has been getting back to basics working alongside local refuse collectors and recycling staff. Service improvements have helped boost local recycling rates and though a recent survey of residents recorded a 92% satisfaction rate, Mr Flaherty believes the council can still do even better. ‘This has been a big team effort. One of the main things I wanted to do was get a feel for the day to day operational issues, to help support the teams on the ground and emphasis that we are all working towards the same objective – improving people's lives,' he explained.
