Opposition leader Ed Miliband has assured Labour-led councils they will play a key part in writing the party's next election manifesto.

Speaking at the Progress think-tank's annual conference on 12 May, Mr Miliband praised the work of Labour's local campaigners in the run-up to the party's council ballots on 3 May, in which they gained more than 820 new council seats.
