Labour Party leaders in local government will convene an emergency meeting on 8 October to co-ordinate their response to the coalition's ‘savage' and ‘ideological' cuts programme, and minimise the impact on town hall jobs, The MJ has learned.
The town halls' meeting follows private talks between local Labour members, shadow communities secretary, John Denham, and the sector's trade union leaders – held at the party's annual conference in Manchester this week – aimed at minimising the impact of a likely 25% cut to council budgets beyond the Comprehensive Spending Review (CRS) on 20 October.
