Wokingham Council has appointed the ex-MD of Doncaster as its new chief executive. Susan Law, former managing director of Doncaster MBC and a current consultant with Mouchel Parkman, was named on Monday. Her departure from Doncaster was dogged by controversy after a public fallout with the council's mayor, Martin Winter. After requesting personal leave amid claims she was being victimised for whistle-blowing, she left the council with a termination payment of £120,000 ‘without any fault or liability on either side' (The MJ, 8 February 2007). Cllr Frank Browne, leader of Wokingham Council said: ‘Ms Law is a highly-regarded chief executive with proven integrity and considerable abilities, and I have no doubt, will be a real asset to the borough as we approach some challenging times ahead. I am sure the council will flourish under her strong and innovative leadership.' Ms Law has 15 years' experience at chief executive level, spanning the housing, health and local government sectors in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and the UK. She has considerable experience in leading and managing the delivery of a range of community services, from utilities to social services. ‘I am really looking forward to living and working in the Wokingham borough, said Ms Law. ‘It is a hugely-attractive and dynamic place, but with that comes significant challenges in maintaining and enhancing that quality of life for everyone. ‘I'm also looking forward to joining the management board at the council and working with councillors to take the council from strength to strength in its quest to be among the best in the UK.' Ms Law is expected to take up her post in early November.
