Southwark LBC has defended itself after a teenager was convicted of the manslaughter of Damilola Taylor, despite being under a 24-hour curfew at a council home at the time. Danny Preddie, 18, and his 19-year-old brother, Ricky, were found guilty last week of the manslaughter of 10-year-old Damilola. It emerged the 18-year-old was under the curfew at a council-run children's home when the attack happened in 2000, but the council said the law at the time prevented under-15s from being remanded in secure accommodation and the home was not a secure centre. A spokesperson said the law changed in 2002.
