Learning from a cyber crisis

Steven Sharples reviews the lessons from a cyber attack at St Helens MBC and how the experience led to working with the LGA on a package of support for other councils

A cyber security attack is the biggest fear any ICT leader has in their role. So, when I received notification that we were facing this very threat, it was all too easy to start running through the worst case scenarios.

We were fortunate to have a brilliant team at St Helens MBC and great support from our partners, so were able to isolate and shut down the attack quickly, and within 10 weeks return to our business-as-usual plans with no long-term impact on our systems.
